Meet Joana

I began tutoring in 2007.  Since then, I became fascinated by  meeting so many different children with so many different needs. My aim as a tutor is to create individually tailored lessons to suit the needs and disposition of each student. I believe that everyone can achieve if they believe they can do it. Building confidence is one of my main strengths. Understanding basic concepts and developing knowledge according to each student’s pace is my primary focus. Sometimes students can struggle in group classes and will respond better in a one-to-one situation. I can help them focus, understand the subject and pass their exams.

My background is in Science. I have a BSc degree in Agricultural Engineering (crop production) (Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro – Portugal),  an MSc in Sustainable Agriculture (Wye College – University of London) and a PhD in Organic Farming (Newcastle University).

As a native Portuguese speaker I also have experience in teaching Portuguese. I worked for the Centre for Lifelong Learning (Newcastle University) where I taught Portuguese as a second language. My oldest student was 91!

In my spare time I enjoy being with my children, running, playing football, looking after dogs, being with friends and being happy 🙂

Primary Education

Building confidence is essential for future success. The Kew Tutor provides support, enabling students to develop their confidence and enjoy learning. We use: the "pen and paper" approach; the "learn through play" philosophy; as well as the use of computers.

Secondary Education

Tuition for exam preparation is extremely beneficial, very often leading to success. The Kew Tutor provides support with a range of different exam boards (AQA, OCR, iGCSE, IB, etc).

The Kew Tutor has experience of working with children with SEN (anxiety, adhd, autism, etc) and is very proud to help those who face greater challenges. We have a very kind and caring approach with everyone, offering lots of encouragement and a positive attitude.

We provide homeschooling tuition to those who, for whatever reason, can't continue in mainstream education.

Adult Learning

The Kew Tutor provides support designed to enhance mathematical, scientific and language skills. Building confidence in these areas can open doors to new opportunities. It's never too late to learn or to take a different direction in life.

Luiza Porfirio, GCSE Science

Best tutor I could’ve asked for. Not only did Joana manage to make science fun for someone who honestly hated it at school, I also credit my A’s in my biology and chemistry GCSE exams to her (after I’d been predicted C’s in both exams!).”

Thomas Shamdasani (Year 5)

Joana is a very good maths teacher, she makes maths very enjoyable and it is great fun having lessons with her. She has helped me become more confident in maths, helping me to find different ways to solve the questions”

Ella Shamdasani (Year 3)

I like Joana because she makes maths easy and you learn more than you’ll think.”

Anne O'Connor-Shinn - Niall's mum (Year 11 Science)

Thank you for your input and patience in turning my son’s grades around. He is now so much more confident in his sciences.”

Mark and Tracy O'Connor - Jack's parents (iGCSE Science: Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Maths).

Joana has homeschooled our son for the last 18 months on the run into GCSE finals. She is not just a great tutor, she is a very emotionally intelligent coach who excels in building confidence with an outstanding human quality. Joana’s integrity, passion to support and nurturing to succeed are formidable and she does it calmly with fun, warmth and a great smile. It’s been a wonderful 18 months of infectious positivity that has reaped great rewards.”
